Have you met Dr. Baker at Topsail Dental?

Dr. Baker, a Wilmington native, has always had salt water running through her veins. She completed her Bachelor of Science degrees in Biology and Spanish at UNC-Wilmington before pursuing her dream of dentistry at the UNC Adams School of Dentistry. There, she was honored as one of the first dental students selected by the American Dental Association to serve as a National Give Kids a Smile Ambassador. Her pediatric dentistry research earned awards for three consecutive years. With a passion for family-focused education and care, Dr. Baker earned her Doctor of Dental Surgery degree and returned to the coast with her husband. She has been dedicated to serving her local community ever since.

WHAT MADE YOU CHOOSE DENTISTRY? 
I was introduced to the world of dentistry at a young age due to my own dental challenges. Despite having multiple cavities and even needing emergent extractions before I turned 10, my experience wasn’t filled with fear. Instead, my curiosity was piqued by how a brief visit to the dentist could alleviate pain and improve my health. This early fascination stayed with me; in elementary school, I always answered "dentist" to the question of what I wanted to be when I grew up. By the grace of God, that passion has remained with me, and I’m fortunate to now work in a field I’ve loved since childhood.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE THING ABOUT BEING A DENTIST? 
My favorite thing about being a dentist is the opportunity to make personal connections with my patients. Building relationships where each person feels safe and confident in my care is incredibly rewarding. Understanding the person behind the smile adds a deeply fulfilling dimension to my work.

WHAT IS YOUR MOST FAVORITE PROCEDURE? 
My favorite procedures are those involving smiles! Working on and shaping front teeth can have a profound impact on someone’s confidence. Helping someone feel proud of their smile is incredibly gratifying and rewarding.

WHAT IS YOUR LEAST FAVORITE PROCEDURE TO COMPLETE? 
My least favorite procedure is pulling teeth. My goal is always to help my patients keep their natural teeth and avoid the need for replacements. It’s tough for me when extraction is necessary, as I prefer to see my patients maintain their own teeth whenever possible.

IF YOU COULD HAVE ANY OTHER PROFESSION OR CAREER PATH, WHAT WOULD IT BE? 
If I could choose another profession, I’d go for something creative like interior design or event planning. And if we're dreaming big, being the President of Walt Disney World sounds like a dream job! Who wouldn’t want to be in charge of creating magic in a theme park?

IF YOU COULD LIVE ANYWHERE IN THE WORLD, WHERE WOULD THAT BE AND WHY?
If I could live anywhere in the world, it would be right here, close to the ocean and near my family. This area has always been home to me, and I don’t see that changing in my lifetime.
